Why digitize your audio now

Tape does not last

Magnetic tape fades, and every year in a basement or a closet takes a little more off. A cassette that still plays today will not play forever. Digitizing stops the clock.

Nothing plays them any more

Cassette decks and reel-to-reel machines have not been made in decades, and the ones still working are wearing out. A digital copy plays on the phone in your pocket.

Some of it is a voice

Audio is the one format where what comes back is somebody talking — a grandparent, a wedding toast, an answering machine nobody ever erased. Once it is digital you can send it to everyone who would want to hear it.

Common questions

What audio formats can you digitize?

Standard audio cassettes, mini-cassettes, micro-cassettes, 1/4-inch reel-to-reel and audio CDs. You can mix all of them in the same kit. If you have something that is not on this list, ask us before you send it.

What if a tape is damaged or blank?

We play every item from beginning to end and check it for audio. If one turns out to be completely blank we mark it as blank, issue you a credit, and label it so you can see which one it was. For damaged items we have equipment that can usually extract the contents anyway; if we cannot, we label the item as damaged with an explanation.

How is audio counted?

One cassette is one item, one reel is one item and one disc is one item. You do not need an exact count before you order — we count everything when it arrives and adjust your bill. Extra items are $17.99 each.

Can you clean up the sound?

Often, yes. Eclipse AI Enhancement can be added to audio items such as cassettes and reel-to-reel, and you get the untouched recording as well as the enhanced one. Note that it applies to audio items themselves, not to the audio recorded onto a video tape.

Do you digitize studio and broadcast audio?

Yes, separately. Half-inch, 1-inch and 2-inch open-reel tape, DAT, ADAT and 8-track cassettes are billed per item rather than through a kit — see professional and broadcast formats.

How will I get the audio back?

On the Cloud, on a USB drive, or on a set of CDs — you choose on the Customer Card in your kit, and you can take more than one. On discs, up to 80 minutes of audio fits on a single CD; anything longer goes on a data MP3 CD. More about what you get.

Will you name the files?

Yes. Wherever an item carries a label we use it as the file name, so a cassette marked Mom and Dad, 1979 comes back as a file you can find.

How long does it take?

A few weeks for standard processing, depending on the size of your order. Processing upgrades are available on the Customer Card in your kit.

Will my tapes be safe?

We have digitized over a million memories and never lost or damaged one, including in shipping. Your kit is crush-proof and water-resistant, tracked in both directions, and we email you at each stage.
