How to Use Digital Access & Digital Memory Backup

If you have chosen to receive your digitized items with a Digital Download via digital access, once your items are finished you will receive an email with a secure link. Here is how you can use that link to access and download your digitized files. Please note that Digital Access is only available for 30 days unless you signed up for Digital Memory Backup.

Accessing your Digital Access from a Computer

1. Check your email for the Digital Access link

You should receive an email from us when your Digital Access is ready. It will look something like this:

 2. Click on the link in the email to open Digital Access in a web browser.

After clicking on the link, you will be brought to a secure Dropbox webpage.

3. Looking at your screen, your order number will appear at the top along with your name. Verify that the information is correct. In addition, your media items will be sorted by media type in folders.

4. To view your media for download, click on a folder to see the contents inside.

You can click on any folder to see the files inside. For example, if you click on the VHS folder, you will then be shown all your VHS tape files.

5. To begin downloading a file, first click on the file name. This will open a preview of the file on your screen.

6. Then click the Download button at the upper left.

Your PC will begin downloading the file. This can take some time, especially if you are downloading video files. The size of the video file may be very large due to the length and quality of the video.

7. When finished, the downloaded file will appear in your Downloads folder and you can access them on your computer.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • You can download an entire folder of items in some circumstances by clicking on Download when viewing all of your files inside a folder. This is only possible for folders containing photos, audio tapes, audio CDs, and a small folder only containing a short video or two. If you do download an entire folder, it will be "zipped" so you will need to unzip it to access your files.
  • You will need to initiate a download for each item one at a time. This is because most digitized files can be very large in size and the limitations of the internet prevent groups of extremely large files being downloaded all at once. However, once an item starts downloading, you can begin downloading another even if that other download has not finished. In other words, you can download several files at the same time as long as you start each download individually.
  • If you have several video files to download, keep in mind that these files can be very large, so make sure you have enough space on your computer to hold them. Your files will only be available for download for 30 days unless you have Digital Memory Backup.
